What Shapes Do Headstones Come In?

Carved headstones

You may have noticed that headstones come in many different shapes, styles and sizes. There’s also different materials, thicknesses and colours. This means that you can achieve a very personal, customised result that suits you or your loved one’s exact requirements. Let’s take a closer look at some of the most popular shapes and why they are so well-loved.

Square

A square-topped headstone is simple and traditional. These stones are seen all over the country in many different cemeteries. There’s plenty of room to place inscriptions and they come in a range of different types of stone. When maintaining a square headstone, the surface is easy to wipe and there shouldn’t be any hard-to-reach areas.

Rounded

There are a few different types of rounded stones available. The curved part is at the top of the stone, and once the curve meets the sides the bottom section is the same as a standard square stone. The curve could be arched, slightly wavy or shaped like a semi-circle on top. This can reduce a bit of the space you have to place inscriptions on, so keep that in mind if you think you’ll need more space.

Shouldered

Shouldered headstones can come with either straight angles or curves. The shoulder refers to the sides being slightly lower than the tops, creating a finish that’s a little different to standard stones. This style is still considered to be very traditional, but it is perhaps not seen quite so often as its square and rounded counterparts.

Serpentine

A serpentine shape is curved and asymmetrical on top. The top edge will dip in the middle to meet the lower edge, creating a wave-like appearance. These offer plenty of space to write inscriptions on and look more distinguishable than some of the more traditional stones.
